Chapter Eight

Five weeks later, on the morning of her wedding day, Kate reflected on the whirlwind of new faces, places, and activities that had swept her up now that her life with Aleksei had really begun.

As Marina and Lydia fussed around her, adding the final touches to her hair and makeup, she looked at her reflection in the mirror. Her morning sickness had passed, and her face had filled out again. Her dress was stunning: of cream silk and styled in a flattering empire line to hide her small bump, it had a bodice decorated with tiny seed pearls, a low neck, and long delicate chiffon sleeves that caught at her wrists; long, soft folds of material flared out from pin tucks under her bust to pool at her feet, which were encased in pretty cream silk ballet pumps. Her auburn hair was caught up and held—Grecian style—by cream silk ribbons studded with more pearls. At her throat lay a row of small sparkling emeralds set in gold, which Aleksei had presented to her yesterday evening along with tiny emerald-and-gold drop earrings as a wedding gift to match her emerald engagement ring. Behind her she could see her bouquet of cream roses laid carefully on a chair.

She was, she announced, coming back to see if she and Georges really were the real thing, and she’d find a job in a bar. Kate was delighted to have her close by again.

She’d also found a supporter in Marina, too. Alexei’s stepsister had been generous and kind in helping Kate to settle in. She had helped Kate get to know the family, including Dafnia, who, with her late husband, had been rocks in Aleksei’s young life after the death of Isadora, his mother. Kate had been quite taken aback by this news. When she’d tried asking Aleksei about Isadora, he had been unforthcoming. “My mother died when I was small,” he’d explained tersely, and then he’d turned their conversation to something completely different.

During the past few weeks, he had been away on business a lot, mainly, he said, tying up the loose ends of relocating to Greece. It meant that there had been little opportunity for intimacy between them, which Kate missed. She relished their lovemaking and lying safe and warm in his arms afterward. But there was plenty to keep her busy too; when Aleksei was not around, her days had been filled with the wedding arrangements.

She’d been
